chapter 16: cheese as a literary inspiration

Poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese.
--G.K. Chesterton

One of the requirements for the students on the Tour was to give two short expository talks introducing various points of interest along the way.

While we were at Oxford, Sean made the comment that in his research for a talk on the Cotswalds, he kept running into information not about the history or architecture but about the cheese.

Naturally, I saw this as an opportunity for a limerick which would (1) exploit an arguably humorous bragging-point for the region and (2) address the dearth lamented by Chesterton in the quote above.

Sean was unmoved.

So I took the idea to the bus, where the Cheese Poetry Contest was born.

Within minutes, we had our first entry.

It was our only entry.

It was also the best entry.

Now, for your reading enjoyment:

From the cow on the hill
Comes the cheese on my table
The white cheese, the yellow cheese
The cream cheese on my bagel.

Trust a Wisconsinite to come up with good cheese poetry.
