light reading: California Vehicle Code

Maybe this is just proof that law school messes with your mind, but I have found some of the most delightful things in the [massive morass that is the] California codes.

Tonight I was reading through the Vehicle Code and found the following in the definition section:

112. "Amber" has the same meaning as "yellow," and is within the chromaticity coordinate boundaries for yellow specified in regulations adopted by the Department of the California Highway Patrol.

And . . .

231. A bicycle is a device upon which any person may ride, propelled exclusively by human power through a belt, chain, or gears, and having one or more wheels. Persons riding bicycles are subject to the provisions of this code specified in Sections 21200 and 21200.5.

* * *

I just finished reading Tolstoy's Resurrection, in large part an examination of the waste, futility, and downright cruelty of the Russian legal system of his day. He made an excellent case, and based on what I've seen of our legal system, what he says is still true today.

Makes you wonder what lawyers are ever good for.

Telling us what bicycles are, I guess.

Funny thing is, I always thought a bicycle had TWO wheels . . .
