et cognitio rerum

"Nomina si nescis, perit et cognitio rerum," Linnaeus averred. "If you don't know the names, even knowledge of the things themselves will pass away."
-- Simeon Potter, Modern Linguistics 144 n.2 (2d ed. 1967).
Somehow I think this has something to do with conversations I've been having lately on the meaning of language and deconstructionism, but I'm not smart enough to figure it out.

At any rate, I like the quotation.

I'm just not sure which side it's on.
