a new song

Yesterday I went to Sam Ash to find a new book for church piano solos.

(Sam Ash is not a good place to go for church piano solos, but it's close by.)

It was frustrating.

Most of the stuff in the sacred section was Christian pop for piano/vocal/guitar. And the rest was easy piano, books that advertised themselves as "hullo there, busy pianist! run out of things to play for church? worry no more! we are here!", or collections that have the same songs I already have, even sometimes in the same medleys.

I was frustrated because I never want to play church music because I HAVE to play church music. Maybe this is why I've lost interest in offertories lately and keep playing songs I love just plain out of the hymnal. But then part of me feels guilty for not putting time and energy and plain old work into music for piano solo.

Play skillfully with a shout of joy.

Don't want to forget the skill . . . or the joy.

Hm.

Wow! I feel the same way about offertories. You should know better than to even try Sam Ash...
