ground turkey cookies

This week is spring break for me (!!!!!), which means more time spent at home than on the freeway.

Yesterday Elisa and I were home alone for most of the afternoon, doing work and becoming increasingly hungry. Hungry, specifically, for chocolate chip cookies.

The only problem was that there were no chocolate chips.

Not two to be easily discouraged in a quest for warm, gooey, and chocolatey baked goods, No. 5 and I scoured the house for anything that vaguely resembled chocolate chips (For all the VeggieTale fans [or ex-fans] out there, if you know the part in the Cheeseburger Song where Mr. Lunt says "and if the world suddenly ran out of cheese / I would get down on my hands and knees / To see if someone accident'ly left some cheese in the dirt / And I would wash it off for you! / Wash it off for you! / Clean that dirty cheese off just for youooooo!!!"-- this was kind of like that.)

There was a sad lack of Easter bunnies, but we did find half a bar of dark chocolate from an Easter basket. We also found some macadamia nuts, pecans, one square of Trader Joe's Pound Plus milk chocolate, raisins, and a container of Hershey's cocoa powder.

But most of all we found the Thanksgiving turkey.

That was what he looked like in his original foily splendor.

Once we had at him, he looked like this:

and this:

Even though it's not in focus, I include this one because it really captured the look of desperation on his face. (At first I thought it was funny he made that particular face, given he is a chocolate turkey cast from a mold in a See's factory some place. But, really, when is the plight of a Thanksgiving turkey not desperate and tragic?)

As we were taking the subject's final photographs, one of No. 3's piano student's moms walked through the kitchen. That was kind of funny.

Did you know we have six Hershey's bars at the bottom of the tea cabinet?

Imagine if Benjamin Franklin had had his way and the turkey had beaten out the American Eagle as our national bird... would those cookies be more or less patriotic?

Hmmmmmm . . . good question. On a related note, surely it can't be only the patriotic association that makes eagles seem more majestic than turkeys? I would feel really awful, I think, grinding an American Eagle, even if it wasn't the national bird.
