And, today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made the curious (but telling) statement
"You've heard about the controversies within the bill, the process about the bill, one or the other. But I don't know if you have heard that it is legislation for the future, not just about health care for America, but about a healthier America, where preventive care is not something that you have to pay a deductible for or out of pocket. Prevention, prevention, prevention -- it's about diet, not diabetes. It's going to be very, very exciting. But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy."
A blogger at U.S. News & World Report has pointed out the inanity of Rep. Pelosi's statement, calling it a "gaffe." "Gaffe" is quite the generous term, considering that Pelosi's was an apparently-scripted address at the 2010 Legislative Conference for the National Association of Counties. The quote you high-lighted is about one of the dumbest things I've heard a politician say. Why would anyone pass a bill and then go and find out what they just passed? Amazing.
Oh wow, that's a pretty terrible thing to say. Boo, Pelosi! Let's have more controversy, not less - provided that it's over the actual text of the bill and its implications, rather than hearsay about what it says.
