. . . and a toothbrush, to boot

Just now I was thinking unhappy thoughts about having to stop and pay my California taxes on the way to school.

Then I remembered I was on the state's payroll.

This has been one of the more confusing and paradoxical realities of my existence so far (and there are quite a few).

So, thanks, California. I will try to smile when I think about how you made me pay sales tax on all my Amazon.com purchases.

::trying to smile::

Look, I'll even smile with teeth . . . the same ones I brushed with the toothbrush you gave me at grad student orientation.

[Note: In reality, I haven't been able to bring myself to use the toothbrush they gave me at orientation. I am saving it for a really desperate situation, where the lack of an appropriate toothbrush is so imperative that I can overcome my revulsion at feeling like a ward of the state.]

I don't care whose payroll you're on, the use tax is ridiculous. :-p
