life and death in springtime

In anticipation of actually being home (and largely unemployed) for this gardening season, I've been spending a lot of time outside. Weeding. Cleaning. Pruning. Mulching. Planting. Watering. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting.

Waiting.

I waited SEVEN WHOLE DAYS before anything sprouted.

(No, patience is not a strength of mine.)

But now things are coming up all over. I am the proud mother of several onion and garlic sprouts, some friendly-looking bean plants, and a host of baby lettuces.

Sadly, there are too many baby lettuces, and some will have to go. I find this distressing, and keep putting off the dastardly deed. This morning, when I was watering them, they were all looking up with such hopeful faces, promising perfect salads.

Poor things.

I very well know how it feels. Though I personally dont do much gardening, as a kid I was always pained when dad weeded our kitchen garden. The small flowers on those weeds were so cute...
