Last week, one of my professors recommended the book Critical Terms for Literary Study, which I had planned to buy today.
I looked up the book on Amazon and noted that it had less-than-rave (but well-reasoned) reviews. The review linked below seems to confirm some of my suspicions after being shown some selections by the professor; not only that, but it seemed like a good review of grad school generally:

Sadly (at least for my future as a "normal" person), I may still buy it . . .
