anti-euphony

Today in Spanish class I learned that another word for "gloaming" is "crepuscle."

I have a few things to say to the persons who came up with those words.

They aren't nice things.

"He loved the gloaming." No.

"He loved the crepuscle." Uh, no.

English is so complex. My parents and I were watching a TV show the other day, and one of the characters said, "Not only are we stuck here, we're stuck here." The phrases are the same, but the emphasis makes the meaning totally different. My parents are not relishing having to explain that to their ESL students.
