A special appearance I am making this week had me reading up on a section of the Cal. Penal Code. As usual (usual for me anyway), I got carried away while reading the Code and made a few interesting discoveries.
One discovery was of a type of person who exists in California previously unknown to me: the "owner of the sounds of a live performance." (Cal. Penal Code s. 653s) I didn't know you could own the sounds of a live performance. But you can.
You can also steal them (which is what makes this person relevant to the penal code).
It makes sense if you start thinking about intellectual property. It just seemed weird.
Makes me want to go practice piano so that I can think "I am the owner of the sounds of a live performance. I own these sounds."
Wow.
The next time you are feeling insignificant, go make some sounds. You will own them.

I wonder if they have the same law in London. As I recall, the London Phil folks aren't very sympathetic to photo/recording-happy tourists. :)
Did you go to the London Phil? I don't remember.
